The Science Behind the Shades

Knowing the various types of colours helps you create rooms that feel visually balanced and harmonious rather than accidental. It also makes the selection process easier, giving you a clear framework for choosing the right tone for each room, whether that is a calming bedroom, an energising kitchen, or a warm and welcoming living area.

Different colour types carry emotional weight, and understanding that connection helps you make choices that improve the way each room feels to live in every day.

The Colour Triad: Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Colours Explained

To navigate the world of interior design with confidence and elevate your home, let’s break down the essential trio that forms every successful design scheme.

1. Primary Colours

Red, blue, and yellow are the foundations of all different kinds of colour. These base shades cannot be created by mixing other colours, making them the starting point for every palette you will ever build.

2. Secondary Colours

Mix two primary colours, and you get a secondary colour. Green, orange, and purple are the result, and all three are widely loved in interior colour schemes for their versatility and warmth.

3. Tertiary colours

Tertiary colours result from mixing a primary with a neighbouring secondary, yielding nuanced shades like blue-green and red-orange. These various types of colour are popular in modern interiors for their sophistication and depth.

Defining Your Palette: Essential Colour Categories

Once you understand the colour wheel, it becomes much easier to see how different kinds of colour come together to shape the look and feel of a home.

1. Warm Colours

Reds, oranges, and yellows add energy and a sense of welcome to any room. These types of colours work beautifully in living rooms and dining areas, creating a warm, friendly atmosphere that encourages conversation.

Our recommendation: Try Steamed Apricots (YR 2011), a soft, inviting tone that adds warmth and character to your space. This is ideal for a warm shade to bring your living room to life.

2. Cool Colours

Blues, greens, and purples create a calm, relaxing atmosphere. These different colour types are ideal for bedrooms and home offices where you want peace and focus.

Our recommendation: Use Perfectly Honest (BB 5087) for a bedroom that feels calm and restful. It is a beautifully muted dusty blue that works across lighting conditions and pairs with natural wood and soft textiles.

3. Neutral Colours

White, grey, beige, and black are classic choices in interior design. Versatile and enduring, different types of colour names that are known to be neutral sit comfortably with almost any other shade in your home.

Our recommendation: Try Solitary Sojourn (NN 9096), for living rooms, hallways, or any shared space. It is a warm, organic neutral colpur that feels grounded and welcoming from morning to evening.

4. Accent Colours

Accent colours are bold shades that highlight and add character to a space. Using accents thoughtfully creates contrast and interest without overwhelming the room.

5. Monochromatic Colours

A monochromatic palette uses different shades and tones of one colour. This creates a clean, consistent look that feels effortlessly put together and works across several types of colour families.

6. Complementary Colours

Complementary colours are found opposite each other on the colour wheel. Using them together creates a bold contrast that brings energy and excitement to any room.

Selecting the Right Colour Type for Your Home

Learning the types of colours is just the beginning; the real transformation starts when you bring them into your own space. Try these easy principles to unlock your home's potential.

1. Making a Statement: Primary and Secondary Colours

Start with primary and secondary colours if you want a bold, confident theme that makes a clear statement. These different kinds of colour are strong, recognisable, and bring instant energy to any room they walk into.

2. Refined Depth: Tertiary Shades

Layer in tertiary shades when you want to add depth and polish. These various types of colour sit between the primary and secondary families, offering subtler tones that feel considered and refined without becoming too bold.

Key to Balance: Neutral Tones

Balance is everything when considering warm and cool tones. Pairing a warm accent with a cool base, or vice versa, creates a room that feels dynamic yet consistent. Knowing these different colour types helps you strike that balance with confidence rather than guesswork.

Finally, always build your palette around a neutral base. Whites, greys, and beiges are the types of colour names that hold everything together, giving bolder shades the breathing room they need to genuinely shine.

Your Journey to a Beautiful Home

Choosing the right colours is more than just an aesthetic decision; it’s about crafting an environment that reflects your personality and brings you comfort.

By understanding the fundamentals of colour theory, from the vibrant energy of primary shades to the grounding influence of neutral bases, you are now well-equipped to transform any space.
