Colours are more than just visual elements; they are emotions, stories, and the essence that breathe life into your home. They blend in a harmonious dance, deciding how your living room will welcome guests with warmth or how your kitchen will spark creativity to try new recipes. Each shade shapes the atmosphere, from serene pastels that instil relaxation to bold contrasts that energise and inspire.
When chosen thoughtfully, colours create balance, helping rooms transition seamlessly while defining their unique purpose. This is where a colour combination chart becomes an invaluable tool. It simplifies the process of selecting complementary hues, ensuring that your home’s palette looks beautiful and feels cohesive and intentional.
Discover how different colour pairings work for various rooms and how a matching colour chart can bring harmony and style to your home.
Importance of a Colour Combination Chart for Your Home
A colour combination chart is an essential tool for anyone designing a home, whether you're painting walls, selecting furniture, or planning decor. It visually maps out colour relationships, such as complementary, analogous, triadic, and monochromatic schemes and makes it easier to select shades that work well together.
Why is a Colour Combination Chart Essential?
Creates a Cohesive Look: Following colour theory ensures every room flows seamlessly into the next.
Enhances Mood and Functionality: Different colours evoke different emotions, making choosing the right hues for each space crucial.
Simplifies Decision-Making: A colour combination chart for your home eliminates the guesswork, giving precise pairings that are proven to work together.
Who Can Benefit from a Colour Combination Chart?
Homeowners looking to refresh their interiors with balanced, stylish colours.
Interior Designers who need a quick reference for creating harmonious palettes.
DIY Enthusiasts planning a home makeover and seeking inspiration for paint colours, furniture, or decor.
Choosing the right colours goes beyond just personal preference; it’s about crafting an inviting, functional, and aesthetically pleasing home environment.
How to Use a Colour Combination Chart for Home
A colour combination chart helps individuals visually select colours that work well together based on colour theory. Understanding how different hues interact can significantly impact the aesthetics and functionality of a space. Here’s how you can learn to use one effectively:
1. Understand Colour Relationships
Most colour charts display relationships using the colour wheel. The primary schemes to consider are:
Complementary Colours: Colours that sit opposite each other on the wheel, such as blue and orange.
Analogous Colours: Colours that sit next to each other, like green, yellow-green, and yellow, offering a seamless transition.
Triadic Colours: Three colours evenly spaced around the wheel, such as red, blue, and yellow.
Monochromatic Colours: Different shades, tones, and tints of a single colour for a cohesive style.
2. Choose a Base Colour
Start by selecting a dominant colour that aligns with the room's purpose. For example, soft neutrals for a calming bedroom or vibrant yellows for an energising kitchen.
3. Identify Harmonious Pairings
Use the chart to find complementary, analogous, or triadic hues that enhance your base colour. If you want a modern aesthetic, opt for a monochromatic scheme; for contrast and energy, go complementary.
4. Factor in Room Size and Lighting
Colours can appear different based on natural and artificial light. Lighter hues make a space feel more open, while darker tones create a cosy atmosphere. Always test samples in different lighting conditions before committing.
5. Apply the 60-30-10 Rule
A well-balanced colour scheme consists of:
60% Dominant Colour: The primary hue that sets the tone of the room; use it on walls and large furniture.
30% Secondary Colour: A complementary shade that adds depth and balance; perfect for upholstery and curtains.
10% Accent Colour: Bold pops of colour that enhance the overall aesthetic; ideal for decor and accessories.
6. Experiment with Undertones
Neutrals aren’t just beige and grey; they have warm or cool undertones that can affect a space. Ensure all chosen hues have complementary undertones for a seamless look.
Best Colour Combinations for Living Rooms
Your living room sets the tone for your home, making it essential to refer to the best colour combination chart for hues that foster warmth, relaxation, and sophistication.
1. Neutral and Bold Pairings: Beige and Navy Blue
Beige is a warm, inviting neutral that serves as the perfect backdrop, while navy blue adds depth and refined elegance. Introduce rich textures like velvet cushions, wooden elements, or brass accents to enhance this combination.
Our Recommendation: Ground your space with hues like Afternoon at Asiatic (NN 9170) while making a statement with Old Ink Pen (BB 5021).
2. Earthy Tones: Terracotta and Olive Green
Inspired by nature, this combination creates a grounded and rustic feel. Terracotta infuses warmth and character, while olive green introduces a calming balance. Incorporate natural materials like clay pottery and woven fabrics for a cohesive look.
Our Recommendation: Create a nature-inspired living room with shades such as Baked Terracotta (NN 9180) and Thanks For The Trees (GG 7126).
3. Bright Contrast: Yellow and Grey
Yellow imbues energy and vibrance into the space, while grey keeps it modern and sophisticated. To make this combination work, opt for mustard yellow against a cool grey backdrop and add metallic or matte black accents to bring the look together.
Our Recommendation: Shades like Soaking Sunlight (YG 8149) and CigarAsh (NN 9237) strike the perfect balance between vibrance and elegance.
Colour Combination Ideas for Bedrooms
Bedrooms should be serene personal spaces; the right matching colour chart can help establish a restful environment.
1. Soft Neutrals: Light Grey and White
This classic combination offers a tranquil and airy aesthetic. Light grey provides a subtle contrast, while white keeps the space open and fresh. Layer with soft linens and natural wood for added personality.
Our Recommendation: Go for an ethereal feel with Gray Area (NN 9585) and Blanched White (WW 0082) to create a riveting ambience.
2. Pastels: Lavender and Light Pink
Perfect for a dreamy and relaxing bedroom, this pairing works well with plush textures and gold or rose-gold accents. Lavender brings a sense of calm, while light pink adds a soft, romantic touch.
Our Recommendation: For a soothing yet playful atmosphere, try hues like Silvery Lavender (PP 4137) with Pink Opal (RR 3009).
3. Deep Blues and Warm Tones: Indigo and Caramel
Indigo creates a deep, moody ambience, making it ideal for restful sleep, while caramel feels like a soothing embrace. Use deep blue walls with caramel-toned bedding or furniture to create a stylish contrast.
Our Recommendation: Contrast the richness of deep blue tones like Dusky Indigo (BB 5018) with the comfort of warm hues like Sticky Toffee (YR 2054).
Ideal Colour Combinations for Kitchens and Bathrooms
Kitchens benefit from colours that enhance both style and functionality, while a bathroom requires comforting hues that help you relax.
1. Fresh Greens and Creams
Green tones like sage or mint feel fresh and rejuvenating, while cream keeps the overall palette light and timeless. Pair with wooden countertops and matte black fixtures for a modern rustic feel.
Our Recommendation: Pair Farm Fresh (GG 7022) with Homemade Cream (YY 1041) to create a light and airy kitchen space.
2. Classic White and Charcoal Grey
This high-contrast, sleek combination is perfect for contemporary kitchens. White cabinetry brightens the space, while charcoal grey on lower cabinets or walls adds drama and sophistication.
Our Recommendation: Achieve a sleek and timeless look with shades like White Linen (WW 0005) and Gris Afternoon (NN 9573).
3. Soft Blues and Whites
Inspired by coastal aesthetics, soft blues paired with crisp whites create a fresh beach-like atmosphere. Consider light blue tiles, white fixtures, and glass elements for a clean and open feel.
Our Recommendation: Turn your bathroom into a place where you can relax and unwind with shades like Soft Cobalt (BB 5013) and River Rapids (WW 0001).
4. Taupe and Light Greens
This refined combination strikes a perfect balance between elegance and serenity. Taupe, with its neutrality and warmth, creates a calming backdrop, while soft light green introduces a refreshing touch of nature, making this pairing ideal for a tranquil bathroom or any space where relaxation is key.
Our Recommendation: Soften your space with Violet Taupe (NN 9299) and Green Light (YG 8001) for a refreshing, stress-free escape.
