A Quick Look Back and What Works Today

Wooden flooring has been around for centuries, once common in European homes, now a design favourite in modern Indian interiors. But choosing the right one isn’t just about looks; it’s about whether it can handle our climate and lifestyle.

Here’s what to keep in mind:

  • Climate matters: Solid wood can react to humidity, so engineered or laminate options are often better suited for Indian conditions.
  • Usage counts: High-traffic areas like living rooms need more durable, scratch-resistant flooring than quieter spaces like bedrooms.
  • Finish & polish: Matte or satin finishes are practical and low-maintenance, while high-gloss looks great but shows wear easily. Protective polishes like polyurethane add durability, especially for busy homes.
  • Maintenance: Regular cleaning and occasional polishing go a long way in keeping your floors looking good.

What Are the Main Types of Wooden Flooring?

Woden flooring is one of the most popular choices among homeowners, and understanding the different types of wooden flooring is the first step. There are four main types of wooden flooring: Solid, Engineered, Laminate, and Parquet.

Solid Hardwood Flooring

Solid hardwood flooring is one of the traditional kinds of hardwood flooring and is made from a single piece of natural wooden plank. It is a classic and elegant choice for all homeowners. Despite being durable and easy to maintain, it requires a controlled climate to prevent swelling.

Engineered Wood Flooring

Engineered wood flooring is another popular option among the different types of wood flooring. It is made of composite layers with a wood structure arranged in a cross-layer to make it more stable and durable. It is recommended for wooden flooring in India because it is tough and durable, making it ideal for the humid climate.

There are different types of engineered wood flooring based on construction:

  • Plywood Core Engineered Hardwood: It is made from multiple layers arranged perpendicular to each other. This arrangement makes the hardwood more resistant to warping and increases its overall strength.
  • HDF (High-density fiberboard) Core: This type of engineered wood flooring is made from layers of tightly compressed wood fibres, which maintain its shape and appearance for a longer period of time. It is a popular choice for its affordability and ease of installation.
  • SPF (Spruce-Pine-Fir) Construction: As the name suggests, this type of engineered wood flooring is made from softwoods such as Spruce, Pine and Fir. It is flexible, allows easy customisation, and is one of the multi-functional options among hardwood flooring.

Laminate Wood Flooring

Laminate wood flooring is a pocket-friendly alternative and easy to maintain. This wooden flooring consists of 4 layers: a wear layer, a design layer, a high-density fiberboard (HDF) layer, and a backing layer. Laminate wood flooring is durable but not waterproof. In areas with heavy moisture levels, the wood flooring can swell.

Parquet Flooring

Parquet flooring is a decorative wooden flooring type amongst other kinds of hardwood flooring. Parquet flooring is made by arranging small pieces of wood in geometric patterns like ‘herringbone’ and ‘chevron’. These are some famous and classic parquet wooden flooring patterns that create a zigzag flooring effect.  Parquet flooring is made for its long life span, but it requires occasional polishing and refinishing.

Our recommendation: Changing the colour of your wooden flooring has never been easier with Allwood Wood Stain. This gives bare wooden flooring a translucent finish and shine without taking away its natural feel and appearance.

Key Wooden Flooring Materials Used in Indian Homes

Before delving into different types of wooden flooring, understanding what they are made of is also an important part of the process. The materials used determine everything from how a floor looks and feels beneath your feet to how it withstands India's varied climate. Here are the materials used in making them:

Teak Wood

Teak wood is one of the solid wooden flooring materials, as it contains natural oils that make it resistant to moisture, termites, and pests. Teak wood is known for its durability, lasting for up to a decade. It is also easy to maintain and can add warm, rich tones to wooden flooring.

Oak Wood

Oak wood is a popular choice for wooden flooring. Available in red and white oak varieties, oak wood is also durable and resistant to scratches and dents. This helps give the floor a uniform and clean appearance.

Maple Wood

Maple wood offers a light-coloured appearance, subtle grain, and a clean, minimalist, modern look. It is an extremely tough wooden flooring material, which makes it durable under high foot traffic.

Bamboo Wood

Bamboo wood is an eco-friendly and sustainable wooden flooring material. It is affordable, durable, and adds a subtle touch of traditional hardwood. Among the different types of wood flooring, this one is ideal for modern homes.

Engineered Composites/ SPC (Stone Plastic Composite)

Engineered composites or SPC are a low-maintenance wooden flooring material. They are made from real wood veneers or stone polymer, which makes them stable and less prone to warping. They are waterproof and dent-resistant, making them easy to maintain.

Choosing What Best Works in Indian Homes

India experiences a changing climate year-round, making it essential to understand which type of wood flooring is best suited to your region.

For Humid Climate

These cities have high humidity due to monsoon moisture, so engineered wood flooring performs better in these areas. It is highly recommended in such conditions, as it is built to fight moisture and prevent warping and swelling.

For Dry Climate

Delhi and Jaipur have dry climates since they are not close to any water body. Solid wood can perform better in these conditions, as there is less moisture, which prevents swelling and warping and keeps the wood stable. But the only drawback is that solid wood requires maintenance or refinishing to keep up its natural wood flooring look.

Our recommendation: Elevate your wooden flooring with Allwood Italian PU Wood Paint, available in both gloss and matt finishes for the perfect balance of style and durability.

Pros and Cons of Wooden Flooring

Knowing the pros and cons of different types of wood flooring can help you make the right choice for your home.

Pros

  • Wooden flooring is versatile and never goes out of style. From a simple plank pattern, which gives a minimalistic and elegant look, to the Herringbone pattern, where boards are cut in a “V” shape resembling fish bones, your flooring has a moment of its own.
  • Some types of wooden flooring, such as bamboo and engineered wood, are eco-friendly options, allowing you to have the best of both worlds.

Cons

  • Wooden flooring is moisture-sensitive and can sometimes swell due to heavy rain or moisture.
  • It requires regular maintenance and refinishing to maintain its charm and shine.
  • Variable pricing for wooden flooring may make these options inaccessible to some.
  • Few wooden floors are not resistant to dents and scratches, which can make them rough over time and increase maintenance costs.

Our recommendation: Notice tiny scratches or dents on your hardwood floor?  Allwood Wood Filler has you covered! It mends scratches and dents, turning wood flooring into a statement that speaks for itself.

Tips You Can Rely On To Make the Right Choice

  • Consider the climate and humidity in your city or state before installing wooden flooring to avoid swelling.
  • Different wooden flooring types have varying maintenance costs and needs, so knowing them beforehand proves useful.
  • Wooden flooring serves different purposes and suits different spaces. Know your space better and choose the best wooden flooring.

Our recommendation: Soft Touch PU Wood Paint - Allwood SoftTouch 1K by Birla Opus is a reliable solution for wood maintenance. It makes the wooden flooring durable, resistant to scratches and stains, and gives a matte or polished look.

Maintaining Your Wood In Indian Conditions

All types of wooden flooring require regular maintenance and refinishing to maintain their natural appearance. Here are some tips to help your wooden flooring last through all seasons.

  • Wooden flooring can resist some water, but it is not fully waterproof. If it stays wet for too long or is exposed to too much moisture, it may warp and swell. This can damage the floor and cause it to wear out faster if not fixed promptly.
  • To keep the wood flooring clean, wipe it down daily with a dry or damp cloth.
  • The different types of wooden flooring can be maintained by applying protective coatings and finishes. This helps retain its shine and elegance.
  • Maintaining wooden flooring is easier with proper indoor ventilation, which helps control moisture levels and prevent damage.
