There’s something deeply satisfying about repainting interior walls and giving your home a fresh look. And no, it’s not just about the colour. With the right prep work before repainting walls, the whole space starts feeling sharper, cleaner, and more “put together”.
Whether you’re repainting high-traffic areas or giving an old bedroom new life, a little effort goes a long way. Ahead, we break down the steps to repaint walls at home, without turning it into a full-blown construction project.
Why Repainting Interior Walls Matters
Repainting interior walls directly impacts how your space looks, feels, and ages. A coat of paint may seem minor, but it can subtly alter the entire atmosphere of a room. Repainting your interior walls:

How Often Should You Repaint Walls?
Wondering how often you should repaint walls? There’s no fixed number for every home; it depends on where the wall is, what it goes through, and how it looks under daylight. For repainting high-traffic areas, the schedule can get tighter.
Here’s a quick breakdown:
Room/Area | Repainting Frequency | Why It Matters |
Living Room / Dining | Every 5–6 years | Lower wear, but noticeable fading over time |
Kitchen | Every 3–4 years | Oil, steam, and heat demand more frequent refreshments |
Bathroom | Every 3–4 years | Moisture and humidity wear down the finish faster |
Bedrooms (Adult) | Every 5 years | Mild usage means the paint lasts longer |
Bedrooms (Kids) | Every 2–3 years | Frequent smudges, art projects, and scratches |
Hallways / Staircases | Every 2–3 years | Constant contact makes repainting high-traffic areas crucial |
Prep Work Before Repainting Walls
The finish of your paint depends almost entirely on what happens before the brush even touches the wall. Prep work before repainting walls may feel tedious, but skipping it leads to patchy, uneven results that don’t last.
Tools Needed to Repaint a Room
Before you even choose a colour, make sure you’ve got the right gear. The tools needed to repaint a room aren’t complicated, but missing even one can slow you down or hinder the final finish.
Tool | Purpose |
Paint roller | For covering large, flat areas quickly and evenly |
Paint brushes | Best for edges, corners, and detailed work |
Paint tray | Holds and distributes paint for rollers |
Painter’s tape | Keeps lines sharp near skirting, switches, and corners |
Drop cloth or plastic | Protects floors and furniture from spills and drips |
Ladder | Helps you reach ceilings and upper wall sections |
Sandpaper | Smooths out the surface before painting |
Putty knife | Fills cracks and holes with filler or wall putty |
Cleaning sponge | Wipes down dust, grease, or old stains |
Extension pole (optional) | Useful for high walls and ceilings without climbing |
Spray machine (optional) | For faster painting, ideal for large or empty spaces |
Steps to Repaint Walls at Home
Following the right steps to repaint walls at home saves time, effort, and repeated work. This is especially useful when repainting old painted walls, where damage and uneven texture can interfere with the finish. Here’s a clear breakdown:
Step 1: Move or cover furniture
Shift large items away from the walls and cover them with an old bed sheet or plastic. This protects surfaces from accidental drips and splatters, especially in tight rooms. Don’t forget to cover the floor too; it’s easier to prevent a mess than clean dried paint off tiles or wood.
Step 2: Clean and repair walls
Use a sponge or cloth to remove dust, spider webs, grease stains, or fingerprints. For walls with damage, scrape off loose paint and fill holes with wall putty. This step is essential when repainting old painted walls, as hidden imperfections will become more visible under fresh paint.
Step 3: Apply primer (if required)
Primer is a base coat that ensures the paint adheres properly and spreads evenly. It's especially important on patchy, repaired walls or when going from dark to light colours. It also reduces paint absorption, helping you use fewer coats. Choose a high-quality primer for smoother coverage.
Step 4: Mix and test paint colour
Stir the paint thoroughly before starting. Always test a small patch on the wall first, as natural light can change how a shade appears. If the colour looks off or feels too strong, better to know now than halfway through painting the entire room.
Step 5: Paint the first coat using a roller
Dip your roller lightly and roll off excess paint before applying it to the wall. Use long, even strokes for consistent coverage. Begin from the top and work downwards. The first coat usually won’t look perfect - it’s more about setting a base for the second.
Step 6: Allow to dry, then apply a second coat
Let the first coat dry fully, usually 4 to 6 hours, depending on ventilation and paint type. The second coat gives the wall depth and smoothness. Rushing this step can cause streaks or peeling later on, especially when dealing with repainting old painted walls.
Step 7: Touch up edges and corners with a brush
Use a smaller brush to finish off near switches, skirting, window frames, and ceiling corners. These detailed areas are where rollers struggle. Clean edges make the entire paint job look sharp and intentional, even if the room has uneven lighting or textured walls.
